P004 → Shapes (WIP)

I wanted to find a way to create new objects to use as furniature mostly within future, poster design. My objective was to create a library of shapes experimenting with textures, scanning, colour and the effects library. The project was an investigation into the contrast between hand-drawn tactile qualities and the precision of computer drawn shapes. I experimented with both jagged, imperfect lines and smoother, more geometric forms, allowing me to explore a range of aesthetics from rough to clean.

I also wanted each shape to be unplanned, following where my hand took me. For the majority, I closed my eyes to avoid similarities forming purposefully. After scanning the drawings at high resolution, I was able to capture intricate textures and details that wouldn’t be apparent in a digital format alone. These close-up scans offer a raw, tactile quality to the design, giving each shape and texture its own personality and depth. The resulting textures and shapes can then be used to enrich various projects and add a layer of authenticity and character to otherwise clean, digital compositions.

While experimenting drawing the shapes, an unexpected but exciting outcome occurred when the pastels began to wear off onto the parchment paper separating the pages. It caused the pigments to transfer, creating loose, abstract outlines and faint impressions of the shapes I had been working on. This accidental layering became a piece of unintentional art in itself. The softened pastel impressions formed a subtle texture that echoed the original forms. The delicate outlines became an interesting contrast to the sharp, bold shapes I had drawn, offering a fluidity and softness that could balance out more structured, graphic designs in future.
